A great way to gain space on your ottoman July 28, 2010 G. Grote (Jefferson City, MO USA) No more will you have to stack all of your remotes on your ottoman ... the Harmony 900 replaces them all!
Okay, so that sounded like a marketing ad, but that is indeed how it worked for me. I have a DirecTV DVR, an XBox360 (w/HD-DVD), and a Wii all connected to a 52" Samsung HDTV through an Onkyo HD surround sound receiver in our living room. I bought the 900 because all of my components are in a built-in cabinet in the wall, and I previously had to keep the doors open whevever we wanted to use the system.
It didn't take me long to set up four standard macros ... Watch TV, Play XBox 360, Watch DVD, and Play Wii ... the remote doesn't control the Wii, but it sets up the receiver and TV, which is still a big help.
My only complaint so far: there is a noticable delay - usually a large fraction of a second, sometimes a good bit longer - from the time I press a button until the command is carried out. This sometimes causes problems - for example, when fast-forwarding through commercials in recorded shows - but I'm getting more used to it. Still, it's the primary reason for giving it only 4 stars.
One other thing to keep in mind (and I guess it should have been obvious to me beforehand) ... in order to make use of the IR repeaters you need sufficient space in front of the components. I didn't investigate the size of the repeaters, and I struggled to make enough room in the cabinets so that the components could receive the IR signals. The primary unit is almost 4" deep (including room for the cables sticking out), and it needs to be far enough in front of the component that it can shine into the IR receiver. The two slave units are much smaller, about an inch deep, so they are no problem, but I think they should have thought out the design of the primary unit a bit more.
All-in-all, it's definitely a keeper ... I am now planning to get one of the IR models for the bedroom ...
Best Remote July 25, 2010 JLDET5 This one works perfect. Perfect design, feel, and operation. Buttons are perfect. You can set this up to work RF so you don't have to point the remote..perfect.
Love it!!! July 19, 2010 Amused This replaces a Harmony 1000 that was a virtual paperweight. It set up easy and after a few tweaks runs my system perfectly. It does suck that you can't do macros, but I knew that coming into it so I can't complain. I just needed a remote that could be used by anyone to get my TV, Receiver, Blu-Ray and DVD changer to work together... and it does that flawlessly. No missed signals and just a few tweaks on delays and it works 100% of the time. It's also very easy to switch to run individual components. All in all, it's great.
Overrated July 11, 2010 Daniel R. Gilbert (San Rafael, CA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
In short...This is a fine universal remote with software problems, and functionality issues. For the money, this is definitely over-rated. I have no other remotes to compare it to, but I have frequent problems with this remote. For the price, I feel justified in stating, that there should be far fewer.
900 July 11, 2010 Kevin J. Cronin (Atlanta, ga) Our first 900 remote had to be returned since the battery would not stay charged and we had to reboot. That was my first experience returning something on Amazon. How easy and efficient was that! We had a new one in 2 days even before we shipped the old one back!
The other one works great and now we have gotten ride of 7 remotes and have just one!
